I am a dreamer. I think outside the box. Creativity, warmth, and learning are values I hold dear. After examining the text, “Educational Psychology,” by Anita Woolfolk, Phillip Winne, and Nancy Perry, my beliefs and values hold most closely to the two central ideas of constructivism; the idea that the learner is active in constructing their knowledge, as well as the idea that social interactions are important to the learning process (2011). A philosophy is so much more than just ideas on paper. It affects the entirety of your interactions with students, as well as how your classroom is set up, two things that are very important to a high quality constructivist classroom.

Besides a dreamer, I am also a Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE), and for the past ten years I have worked at a daycare with an emergent curriculum, primarily in the kindergarten and school age programs. Like constructivism, the emergent curriculum is based on the theories of Jean Piaget, John Dewey, and Lev Vygotsky. Teachers plan the programming around children’s interests, record the outcomes, analyze the results, and then plan more programming around these new interests. I may currently be an RECE, but teaching in an elementary school is always something I have wanted to do from a very young age. What is Constructivism?
Constructivism has been a popular term used in education since the 1990s but can be traced back to a much earlier time than that (Maddux & Cummings, 1999, p.8). Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky are the two theorists who are closely linked to the development of constructivism. Over the past decade, education has seen an alarming increase in the number of students who are qualifying for special education services as well as students who are being labeled as “at risk” students. The fundamental features of constructivism are eliciting prior knowledge, creating cognitive dissonance, application of new knowledge with feedback, and reflection on learning. Constructivists feel that it is important for students to be able to make the big connection between prior knowledge, their beliefs, new knowledge, and by learning through their individual experiences. (Baviskar et al., 2009, p. 543)
Constructivism suggests that students should be able to develop an advanced way of thinking that allows them to make appropriate connections. A student-centered classroom enables students to develop and enhance their own knowledge through self-regulation, active learning, cooperative group work, and self-reflection. “In the constructivist classroom learning emphasizes the process, not the product. How a student arrives at a particular answer is what matter” (Yilmaz, 2008, p.169). With multiple definitions being linked to constructivism it is easy to understand how this theory can be misused or misinterpreted. Since constructivism lacks a concrete definition it becomes difficult for educators to properly implement this learning style into any classroom; therefore it also becomes difficult to refer to constructivism for any type of research data about education (Maddux & Cummings, 1999, p.7).
